SHERI TORGRIMSON NEWSLETTER:S&S Polish Links Summer 2015

Hello and welcome to summer! May you not be having either floods or drought. It’s very dry here and temperatures are supposed to soar this week. (Which means the prices of fruit and veg will too.)
> Summer means school is out and so we have a break from our trips to the children’s home and a chance to slow down and reflect over the year.
>
> This has been a very different year. I’ve been trying to work myself out of a job in our ministry. So, when people came to me with ideas, I said, “see what it takes” and then we usually said, “great idea, green light – go for it.” Someone wanted to offer Bibles to the kids – eight were given to those who asked for them. Another idea was to make prayer cards of the kids and find people to pray for them individually. (We tried this a few years ago and it didn’t work, pray and try again….) Every kid, even the 7 new ones that came since December, has at least one person praying regularly for them, most kids have two. PTL! (We need a few more prayer partners – if you would be willing to pray for a kid from Sept. for the next, please send me an email and I’ll get you a kid’s prayer card.)
>
> Someone else said, “maybe we could have the kids make some Christmas card designs, we’ll print them and sell to raise money for the home.” We raised over 2,000 zlotys to send 3 kids to summer camp. Another volunteer said she wanted to do an educational project with a small group of kids – a gardening project, which you heard about in our last email. This last one has turned into a major landscaping project with a budget of 60,000 zlotys ($20,000). God has to supply for this one! The kids have dared to dream. Please pray that God will make this one into a reality. We had another contest for best and most improved pupil. The girl who was most improved took her marks up nearly a whole grade point average. Three people unexpectedly gave money for the costs and that covered most of it. The four winners will be escorted by their very own personal shoppers (our volunteers) throughout the mall, to dinner and a movie.

> In my heart has been a dream to help kids get an education, to be able to break dysfunctional family cycles (abuse, neglect, alcohol), and to be able to grow into independent adults. This summer we have our first kid coming to Warsaw for an internship and p/t job. Iza will be staying with a couple of our volunteers for a month. Please pray that they will have great impact on her life. We are putting together a foundation (Dare to Dream) for this purpose. We need one more board member in order to register, pray that God will give us the right person.
>
> One of our volunteers just sponsored one of the kids to camp with his daughter. At church today another couple came up and said that their daughter had also befriended our Monika at camp! Small world. We have been talking about organizing a summer camp for some of the kids next summer and it looks like we can cooperate with the group that organized this Christian camp (they offer horse-riding & English camps.) They do a good job of organizing and have experience. We have volunteers and kids who need to go to camp. (Next we find sponsors….:)

> So I guess my advice is, don’t worry about losing your place in ministry by letting others do things (and maybe better than you could.) You’ll end up with a growing ministry and more to oversee than you might have ever imagined! If I needed to confirm this any further, my co-leader Rafal told me on the weekend at our meeting that I should move away from the detail side and focus on the big picture. So I’m moving in that direction – please pray that people step up and take over a lot of the organizational and planning processes. (Also my other co-leader Kate has stepped down – 3 little kids and going back to work, she just can’t manage anymore.) I’m asking 2 volunteers to step into the leadership team and we are going to come up with a plan to have teams in different areas who will be responsible for planning their events each trip. I will be focusing more on overseeing, casting vision, managing change and getting our foundation up and running.

> There’ll be more changes coming as well but we need to make some. I read a quote recently that will surely hit some of you straight to the heart as much as it did me. The setting was the Israelites who wanted to play it safe when they saw the giants in the promised land. “Despite all the miracles they had seen, the deliverance they had experienced, and the manna that had been provided, they continued to complain, choosing fear rather than faith when the opportunity arose…And a whole lot of time was wasted. Do you and I have forty more years to keep doing the same old thing, expecting different results?” (italics mine) (Lucinda McDowell, Live These Words) Do we keep doing the same old thing, expecting the results to somehow be different? Tough question! We have spent 7 years building these relationships which is a very important thing and not to be downgraded, but only because I opened myself to doing things differently this past year, have things really started to take off. We certainly have giants in front of us and I confess in some areas, I’m shaking in my boots. However, even though I am sure we will go through some tough changes in our ministry in the next year, I am convinced that this is the road God would have us take and we must follow Him and trust. He can provide places for volunteers, funds for projects, homes for kids to stay in and internships and jobs for them. He can draw those kids and staff from the home to Himself. We just have to be open and obedient. (Of course, you all know what they say about putting that live offering on the altar – it keeps squirming off!) It won’t be easy but I am pretty sure it’ll be good. Please pray with me that God would give the right people, that He would move the wrong ones into their right places, that we would have the wisdom to know the difference and generally have wisdom in all we do. In this world of microwave/instant food,Twitter and instant reactions, pray that we would have the grace to take time and reflect before responding, esp. to criticism or harsh words and unhappy people.

> I’m enclosing a couple of pictures from our Children’s Day event at the end of May. As I went through the photos one of our teen volunteers took, I was blown away by the amount of smiles and happy faces I saw. We had prayed especially that the kids would have joy and they did. Some of them are so traumatized, abused and hurting inside but on that day, they played, had fun and found a day of joy. Praise God – all those happy faces were like a worship experience for me.

> On a more personal note, Slawek and I will be leaving for Canada at the end of July for five weeks. I haven’t been for over four years so am really looking forward to seeing my family. (And we’ll meet a lot of changes for sure, including nieces and nephews now towering over me!) We hope to see some of you. Please pray for our time there, that God would put us where He wants us, when He wants us to be there. Pray for rest, esp. for our souls and bodies – we have been working so hard lately and are quite tired. Pray for meaningful conversations, esp. with family. Pray that we would be a blessing and not a burden to anyone wherever we go. Pray that whatever doesn’t get done before we leave is something that can wait. (There’ll be plenty waiting for us when we get back haha!) May you have a good summer. We thank you for your prayers – the ones that you have prayed and the ones that are to come.
